Male breasts, also casually referred to as ‘moobs’ or ‘man boobs’ is a common and sometimes embarrassing problem. While most associate the problem with being overweight, in many cases it’s because of a medical condition called gynaecomastia.
Although some disguise the condition with looser clothing, many men are turning to chest reduction surgery as a more effective solution. This procedure creates a flatter and more masculine chest shape and offers a huge boost to self-esteem.
What is gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is a condition that can affect men of all ages and fitness, and there are several causes. Usually it is triggered by a hormonal imbalance of oestrogen, which leads to the development of abnormal mammary gland or fatty breast tissue, giving the appearance of feminine breasts. As the condition is not due to extra body fat, it cannot be improved by exercise or diet.
What does the surgery involve?
The procedure usually involves a surgical incision around the lower part of the nipple. From this incision, excess fat and glandular tissue is removed via surgical excision combined with liposuction. For larger breasts, the nipple may need to be repositioned.
The procedure is conducted under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep and won’t feel a thing, and normally requires an overnight stay in hospital. This is a permanent solution, meaning the breast tissue does not grow back.
How long does it take to recover from male breast surgery?
As with most surgery, some bruising and swelling can be expected. A special compression vest must be worn for three weeks after the procedure to help you heal. You can generally expect to return to work after one week. Heavy lifting, sports and strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks.
Will I have scars?
As the procedure involves very minute incisions, scarring is minimal and any scars will fade in time.
